Netanyahu voices support for attack in Syria

Israel's Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu warned Sunday over Iran's presence in Syria after the US, Britain and France launched a wave of punitive airstrikes against Bashar al-Assad's Syrian regime on Saturday in response to alleged chemical weapons attacks that President Donald Trump branded the "crimes of a monster".

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced earlier this month a new agreement with the U.N.'s refugee agency that would have16,000 African migrants resettled in Western nations and a similar number given temporary status in Israel.

"Israel gave full support to President [Donald] Trump's decision to stand against the use and spread of chemical weapons one year ago", he said, adding: "There is no change in Trump's determination and Israel's support in that issue".

Iran's involvement in Syria in support of Assad has alarmed Israel, which has said it will counter any threat.

Netanyahu warned that the Syrian government is endangering itself by giving Iran and its proxies a "forward base".

A day earlier, just hours after the Western coalition struck the military targets in Syria, the Israeli army released a statement saying the drone was an armed one meant to carry out an attack in Israel.

Israel's military asserts an unmanned Iranian aircraft shot down in February following infiltrating its air-space was armed with explosives and onto a mission to assault Israel.

Netanyahu said Israel would not allow Iran to establish itself in Syria, according to his office.

Netanyahu on Saturday ordered his government ministers not to comment on the American-led strike in coalition with Britain and France.

"If it is a multi-phased attack on Syria, we will see an Iranian response against Israel", said Dr. Dina Lisnyansky from the Political Studies Department at Bar Ilan University in Israel.

Israel has mounted air strikes in Syria on a regular basis, targeting suspected weapons shipments to Lebanese Hezbollah.

Syria and Russian Federation have repeatedly denied that a chemical attack on the former rebel town of Douma took place.
