IN farm recalls over 200 million eggs due to risks of salmonella

A recall of 206,749,248 eggs has occurred in the USA, following 22 reports of illness linked to salmonella contamination.

The recall was voluntary on Rose Acre Farms' part.

The illnesses were reported in states on the U.S. East Coast, leading the FDA to conduct extensive interviews.

Rose Acre Farms in Seymour, Indiana voluntarily recalled 206,749,248 eggs due to the health scare, the FDA said in an announcement Friday.

At least 11 inches of snow had fallen in Valentine, and areas near Chadron and Sidney received almost 10 inches. The mountains have seen between 2-6 inches of snow with up to five inches more possible through the evening.

The eggs were sold through retail stores and restaurants.

It is believed that the eggs reached buyers in 9 states, including Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.

A full list of affected eggs is listed on the FDA's food recall website.

They have the plant number P-1065 with the date range of 011 through 102 on the carton. Numerous eggs were sold in Food Lions stores.

Those who purchased eggs from the notified lot were asked to immediately return them to the shop from where they purchased it, for a refund.

They were sold under the brands Country Daybreak, Crystal Farms, Coburn Farms, Sunshine Farms, Glenview, Great Value as well as at Walmart and Food Lion stores.

The FDA says 22 illnesses have been reported so far.

Salmonella infections are particularly risky to the young and elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

She said there would also be limited new on-shore permits around the North Island's Taranaki region, where most of New Zealand industry is concentrated.

Salmonella is a bacterium that adversely affects young children and the elderly, triggering fevers, vomiting and abdominal pain.
