- Diplomats and scientists tell Reuters that the Syrian government's chemical weapons stockpile has been linked for the first time by lab tests to the largest sarin nerve agent attack of the civil war. "Big price to pay", he said via Twitter.

He added: "These latest reports must urgently be investigated and the global community must respond".

Whitehall sources confirmed the United Kingdom was "not ruling anything out nor in" but acknowledged there were "political issues" around securing parliamentary support for British involvement after MPs voted against strikes following a chemical attack in 2013.

The ministry said the allegations have been planned beforehand to prolong the lives of the "terrorists" in Douma.
