Secretary-General's statement on Syria

In his reaction to the missile strikes, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged all countries to act consistently with the UN Charter and worldwide law.

As President Donald Trump ponders retaliatory military action in Syria, his envoy to the United Nations on Friday laid out a forceful argument Friday for reining in the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"There's an obligation, particularly when dealing with matters of peace and security, to act consistently with the Charter of the United Nations and with global law in general".

"I call on the members of the Security Council to unite and exercise that responsibility", Guterres said.

Guterres called on all the United Nations members to "unite" to deter further escalation that might aggravate the suffering that the Syrian people have endured during the conflict.

Ambassador Nikki Haley addressed the U.N. Security Council in emergency session ahead of a vote called by Russian Federation to attempt to block US action.

Any use of chemical weapons is abhorrent.

He urged the UN Security Council to agree on establishing an inquiry that would identify the perpetrators of chemical attacks. "I will continue to engage with the Member States to help achieve this objective", he added.

Earlier Friday, the US announced it had "very high confidence" that the Assad regime was responsible for a suspected chemical attack last weekend.

Air strikes by the three allies on Saturday hit three targets that Western officials said were linked to chemical weapons development in the Damascus and Homs areas.

The White Helmets, a civil defense agency, blamed the Assad regime for the alleged chemical attack, which it said killed 78 civilians and injured hundreds of others.
