Shaker said that a number of officials were killed after a Public Order Police vehicle stepped on a roadside mine.

In a separate development, three police constables were killed after Taliban attacked security checkpoints in outer neighborhood of Gardez city, capital of eastern Paktia province Thursday night, according to officials.

Herat provincial governor spokesman Jailani Farhad said that two armoured Humvees were destroyed in the attack in Shindand district, adding the Taliban also seized weapons and ammunition during the raid.

The province of Ghazni is located south of Kabul lying along a key route.

"Five National Directorate of Security operatives, Khwaja Omari district governor and seven police force members were martyred (in the attack)", he added.

The Taliban controls large swaths of Ghazni, a strategic province near the border with Pakistan.

Around 45 insurgents were also killed and several others wounded, he said, adding: "Taliban have set alight the district office complex, but reinforcement arrived at the district and now the situation under control".

Dozens of people, many of them children, were killed or wounded after Afghan Air Force helicopters struck a madrassa in Dashte Archi district, security sources and witnesses said. The Taliban usually announce the launch of a spring offensive in April.

Mohammad Arif Noori, a spokesman for the governor of Ghazni Province, said that Taliban insurgents attacked the government compound of Khwaja Umari district.

Afghan officials often give conflicting casualty figures immediately after an attack.

As the Taliban faces growing pressure to take up President Ashraf Ghani's offer of peace talks, the United Nations called on "all parties" to do more to protect civilians.

Moseni also said 45 Taliban were killed and eight members of the Afghan security forces were wounded.
