Israeli troops fire at Gaza protests; 9 wounded

Restricted clashes between stone-throwing Palestinians and Israeli troopers took place in a minimum of two areas alongside the border, AFP reporters talked about, with greater protests anticipated after Friday Muslim prayers.

"Media reports suggest that on Friday, Israeli soldiers will once again be ordered by high command - in contravention of global law - to engage in sniper fire on Gaza residents who come within 300 meters of the border fence or engage in other non-life-threatening actions".

Since the protests began on March 30, 34 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces firing live ammunition, tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets at the demonstrators on the other side of the border.

There were so far fewer protesters on Friday than in the two previous demonstrations, which saw tens of thousands gather near the border with Israel at five locations.

They burned tires to create a shield of a black foggy smoke. they also burned Israeli flags and raised Palestinian ones.

The Israeli military said demonstrators also hurled an explosive device and several firebombs near the fence.

Pictures coming from the area showed them pulling parts of the barbed wire on the floor in eastern Gaza City. Most were injured east of Gaza City, but two were hurt in clashes near Al-Bureij in central Gaza.

One of the Palestinians was in critical condition, Palestinian medics said, as a protest dubbed "The Great March of Return" moved into its third week.

On Friday, hundreds flocked to one of five camps near Gaza City, stepping on a large Israeli flag laid out on the ground at the entrance.
