Uber Partners With Getaround For 'Uber Rent' Service

"You share a vehicle with someone, and it kind of feels a little weird", noting how people don't know if it's socially acceptable to work, chat or say nothing at all.

Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber's chief executive, announced the new option at an event in Washington which he also promoted the company's recent acquisition of the electric-bike rental service Jump, and a partnership with car-sharing service Getaround. Khosrowshahi said the company is launching a product called Uber Rent later this month, in which people can use their Uber app to rent Getaround's cars.

Uber said it's partnering with peer-to-peer auto sharing service Getaround for the program.

Uber Technologies now moving to expand its services as well as adding more travel options for its customers. So Uber is looking for new ways where it can expand and wean people off owning cars. "That's why we want to provide alternatives to personal auto ownership by bringing together multiple modes of transportation right in our app", said Jahan Khanna, Head of Product, Mobility at Uber. To find out this information users will simply have to be in San Francisco and open the Uber app once the the Uber Rent feature has launched to search for and find cars to rent. "While 180 Days was about correcting missteps of the past, we also needed to think longer term, and the obvious place to start was the Driver app", says Khosrowshahi.

The expansion kicked off earlier this week after Uber announced that it had acquired bike-sharing startup Jump. The plan is to eventually roll out Uber Rent to other cities, but Zaid declined to comment on the specifics. For comparison, just 1,500 taxi medallions were given out in San Francisco in 2016, according to the city's Treasurer & Tax Collector.

Uber has partnered with Getaround for its upcoming "Uber Rent" service which will allow riders to request a vehicle rental instead of a ride from an Uber driver. Uber Movement will now be available in 12 more cities: Amsterdam, Bangalore, Brisbane, Cairo, Hyderabad, Melbourne, Mumbai, Nairobi, New Delhi, Perth, Pittsburgh, and Toronto.

It's also an opportunity for Uber to benefit from transportation transactions that happen off of the company's platform.

Following the news that the ride-hailing company had acquired electric bike-share startup Jump, Uber announced that its app will soon feature multiple new transport options, including bike-sharing, options for mass transit, and peer-to-peer vehicle rentals alongside their long-promised autonomous ride-hailing.

Uber said that the firm is expanding Uber Bike by JUMP to Washington, DC.
