Salman Khan blackbuck poaching case: Bail hearing to continue today

Salman was accused in the case which took place while he was shooting for the film "Hum Saath-Saath Hain" in 1998. Salman was sentenced to five years in jail for his crime and he spent the last night in the Jodhpur Central Jail.

Held guilty under Section 9/51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, he had faced a maximum punishment of six years behind bars. The actor is now in Jodhpur Central Jail.

"All of them were in a Gypsy vehicle that night, with Salman Khan in the driving seat".

While Salman is convicted, other accused including Tabu, Neelam, Saif Ali Khan and Sonali Bendre have been acquitted by the court. He tweeted: "But at this point in time I just feel helpless and my heart goes out to Salman Khan and his family".

Dressed in a pair of jeans and a navy blue shirt, Salman had arrived in Jodhpur from Mumbai in a chartered plane and had planned his return for the afternoon in the hopes of an acquittal.

According to Indian TV channel Aaj Tak, Salman Khan has been taken into custody and a warrant is being prepared.

Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Neelam were also present in the vehicle Salman allegedly used for hunting the endangered species protected under Schedule 1 of the Indian Wildlife Act.

His defence team said Khan, one of Bollywood's most bankable stars, would appeal against the conviction in a higher court on Friday.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Dev Kumar Khatri, after hearing both the sides, pronounced the verdict and convicted the actor on the basis of the evidence gathered against Salman from DNA fingerprinting report, postmortem report of the blackbuck and an eye-witness, Chogaram.

His next film, "Race 3", is an action thriller scheduled for release later in the year. His lawyer, Anand Desai, said they filed an urgent appeal of the verdict on Thursday, but the court said it would hear the plea for bail or suspension of the sentence at 10.30 am on Friday.

Salman also had a jail stint in Mumbai when he was also involved in a hit and run.
