Angels rookie Shohei Ohtani almost ideal in Big A mound debut

Los Angeles (6-3) had a chance for its best nine-game start in franchise history but lost 7-3 to the A's on Saturday night to end their second three-game winning streak of the season.

The Oakland Athletics will get their second crack of the season at rookie sensation Shohei Ohtani on Sunday, with the young right-hander on the mound for the Angels.

Angels starting pitcher Shohei Ohtani delivers a pitch against Oakland in the first inning in Anaheim on Sunday, April 8, 2018.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Shohei Ohtani retired the Oakland Athletics' first 19 batters Sunday before Marcus Semien's seventh-inning single broke up the two-way Japanese sensation's bid for a ideal game in his first home pitching start for the Los Angeles Angels.

Giants game canceled due to rain
Posey's home run off starter Rich Hill was the first of the season for the Giants cleanup hitter and first since August 8, 2017. CARDINALS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 3 In the coldest home start in Cardinals' history, Jose Martinez homered and drove in four runs as St.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia stuck with his plan to keep Ohtani out of the lineup the day before and the day after he pitches, and Ohtani did not bat in the loss on Saturday night.

Chapman has reached base in every single game this season, but with Ohtani on the mound it won't be an easy task to do so again today.

Jim Johnson (1-0) got the win as the Angels took their third in a row and won for the sixth time in seven games.

Although he isn't hitting in the same games in which he pitches, Ohtani homered in three consecutive games earlier in the Angels' homestand. Semien smacked his 80th pitch into left for Oakland's first hit of the game with one out in the seventh.

Increasing Clouds and Isolated Showers Sunday Night
Highs will be a tad warmer in the middle 40s but even that is still nearly 20 degrees below normal for this time of year. Friday will be another mild day with high temperatures reaching well into the 60s under a mix of clouds and sunshine.

If Graveman and the bullpen can hold things down for the A's, they'll be in a good spot for success with the way the offense has been rolling of late.

Pujols is 14-for-33 off Graveman with four home runs and 11 RBIs. Trout is hitting.333 (10 for 30) with two home runs and four RBIs against him.

Graveman is 2-2 overall in his career against the Angels with a 4.33 ERA and 12 home runs surrendered in 68 2/3 innings.

In Arlington, Texas, Russell Martin homered and hit a pair of RBI singles to back six solid innings from Marco Estrada for Toronto. After hitting Jed Lowrie following the hit allowed to Semien in the seventh, Ohtani regrouped by retiring Khris Davis and striking out Matt Olson to exit with a standing ovation. "Eliminate those and we'll get deeper into the ballgame".
