Though Xi made no mention of any territorial issues, the country has been involved in a number of disputes with some of its neighbours.

Most members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have maintained amicable ties with Japan, Asia's second-largest economy after China, but they may start to keep their distance from Tokyo to protect their national interests over the next two decades, the diplomats said.

Taiwan has been self-governed since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, but has never formally declared independence from the People's Republic of China, which it views as an illegitimate government. This is the first-time a President addressed its valedictory session.

On the domestic front, the legislature approved the biggest government shake-up in years, merging the banking and insurance regulators to tackle financial risks, and amended the constitution to expand the Communist Party's role in the country's affairs.

"The endeavour of the Chinese people has led to a tremendous transformation of the Chinese nation: it has stood up, grown rich, and is becoming strong!"

Showing his nationalistic slant, Xi also promised to restore China's past glory and turn it into a "great modern socialist country" by the middle of the 21st century. At the same time, China will continue to roll out incentives to woo younger Taiwan citizens and business leaders over to its camp.

Steve Tsang, director of the SOAS China Institute, said the president was using nationalism and a call for unity to convey the message that he would get tough on his enemies, both inside and outside China.
