Trump hails 'great day for democracy' after former Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director fired

McCabe told the Times that his firing was meant to undermine the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

John Dowd, President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, is calling for the Russian Federation probe to be shut down and special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation to be ended.

While Dowd first told The Daily Beast he spoke on behalf of the president, he later said he only expressed his personal beliefs.

Dowd told The Washington Post on Saturday he was speaking for himself and not on Trump's behalf.

Warner's comment came after The Daily Beast published a statement from Trump lawyer John Dowd saying Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein should end Mueller's investigation.

Mr Trump tweeted in praise of Mr Sessions's announcement on Friday night, asserting without elaboration that Mr McCabe "knew all about the lies and corruption going on at the highest levels of the Federal Bureau of Investigation!"

It's only a one-year deal for the talented defensive player, but adds a lot to Houston's secondary. Mathieu, who turns 26 in May, had 78 total tackles, a sack, and two interceptions last season.

McCabe says he was sacked as part of an effort to undermine Mueller's probe into Russia's election interference.

"The president, the administration, and his legal team must not take any steps to curtail, interfere with, or end the special counsel's investigation or there will be severe consequences from both Democrats and Republicans", Schumer said. "Their persistence in this campaign only highlights the importance of the Special Counsel's work".

McCabe wasn't in charge of the Clinton investigation at the time, and didn't take on an "oversight role" in the probe until February 2016, long after his wife lost her election bid.

The Justice Department said an internal investigation had found that McCabe made unauthorized disclosures to the media, and had not been fully honest "on multiple occasions" with the department's inspector general.

This person says the memos are similar to the ones maintained by former FBI Director James Comey, who Trump fired last May.

Though McCabe had spent more than 20 years as a career Federal Bureau of Investigation official, Trump repeatedly condemned him over the last year as emblematic of an Federal Bureau of Investigation leadership he contends is biased against his administration.

An inspector general raised questions about McCabe's discussions with reporters about a case related to Hillary Clinton. We have yet to see what's in the inspector general's report, and it's quite possible that it will undercut McCabe's credibility and prove his firing was warranted.

"The only thing the President has been applying pressure to was to make sure we get this (Russia investigation) resolved so that you guys (the media) and everyone else can focus on the things that Americans actually care about", Sanders said then.

However, in a statement issued immediately after his termination was announced, McCabe said the decision was politically motivated. In each, he asked about Mr. McCabe's wife, Jill, who ran a failed campaign as a Democrat for the Virginia State Senate. McCabe suggested in his statement that he was trying to "set the record straight" about the FBI's independence against the background of those allegations.

If Trump doesn't want the firing of McCabe to appear political, he's not doing a very good job.

Ahead of the story's publication, McCabe authorized an FBI spokesman to speak with the Wall Street Journal about efforts to keep the Clinton Foundation investigation moving forward, McCabe told ABC News.

Dowd claims the ongoing investigation - which has already led to 22 indictments, including four former Trump campaign officials, and five plea deals - was "manufactured" by Comey, who ripped into Trump on Saturday for celebrating McCabe's firing. The statement came as Comey prepares to kick off a national tour and PR campaign to promote his upcoming book, which is said to be a detailed account of his conversations and interactions with the president prior to his firing last May.
