Sweden pledges to support historic US-North Korea dialogue

Sweden has had diplomatic relations with North Korea since 1973 and is one of the few Western countries with an embassy in Pyongyang.

South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha was in Washington on Friday for talks on North Korea and trade, as was Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono, who met U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan in the morning.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry says Ri Yong Ho will meet his Swedish counterpart Margot Wallstrom during his rare trip overseas Thursday.

"Talks will continue tomorrow", the source said.

Speaking to local media, Prime Minister Lofven said his country would be happy to host negotiations between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump.

"If we can use our contacts in the best way, we will do so", she said, noting the situation on the Korean peninsula was "of interest to us all" in terms of security.

The historically neutral European country, whose embassy represents U.S. interests in the North Korean capital, has often played the role of intermediary in discussions between Washington and Pyongyang.

According to a press release issued prior to Ri's arrival in Sweden, Ri and Wallstrom's discussions would focus on "Sweden's consular responsibilities as a protecting power for the United States, Canada and Australia". It provides consular services for the United States in North Korea.

The presidential office says Seoul will propose holding a high-level meeting with Pyongyang late this month to help arrange the inter-Korean summit. So far, North Korea has yet to publicly comment on what it hopes to gain from the summits, adding an extra element of mystery and skepticism.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven told a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Friday that Sweden, whose embassy represents USA interests in Pyongyang, was ready to act as a facilitator to help resolve tensions.

Japan has been more guarded about those talks than South Korea, and wants any discussion to include ways to resolve a dispute over the return of those abducted by North Korean agents.

TBS said Abe told Moon he wanted North Korea to not only suspend nuclear and missile testing, but also accept International Atomic Energy Inspectors on its soil.

Trump and Moon "agreed that concrete actions, not words, will be the key to achieving permanent denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, and President Trump reiterated his intention to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un by the end of May", the White House said.

It could suggest a potential breakthrough, or a fallback to the North's longstanding position that it's willing to get rid of its nuclear weapons if the United States guarantees its safety. Trump meanwhile said it was thanks to Swedish negotiations that American student Otto Warmbier was released from North Korea past year, where he was being held in prison.
