Halep, Venus advance, Wozniacki knocked-out

Romania's star player Simona Halep, who now tops the WTA women's tennis rankings, defeated Croatian Petra Martic in the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3, advancing to her third Indian Wells semifinal.

Despite being at the top of the rankings, Halep is yet to win a Grand Slam, having recently lost to Caroline Wozniacki in the final of the 2018 Australian Open in January.

Speaking after defeating China's Wang Qiang in the fourth round of the Indian Wells, Simona Halep said that Williams should have been the top-seeded in the competition.

Halep advances to the quarter-finals where she will face unseeded Petra Martic of Croatia who beat Czech Marketa Vondrousova 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).

The Russian beat No.13 Stephens in 3r and No.2 Wozniacki in R16, her fourth and fifth Top 20 wins of the season, and followed them with her ninth top 10 career victory. "It was good that after 3-1 I just woke up and I realized that I'm not doing the right thing on court".
