The prior week there were 18 deaths, while there's been a steady decline in weekly deaths since 46 were recorded three weeks ago.

Influenza is an infection of the nose, throat, and lungs caused by a virus that is spread through the air.

"We feel it's appropriate to lift these temporary visitor restrictions now, since spending time with healthy loved ones, including children, is important for many of our patients".

DPH says the percent of hospital patients due to pneumonia attributed to the flu has decreased to 3.4%.

Reports of influenza-like illnesses are not reportable to local health officials, and county health departments receive only reports of flu deaths.

Besides the elderly, other vulnerable population groups are children younger than 5, pregnant women and those with pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease.

There have been 325 confirmed cases of influenza A, 391 cases of influenza B and six cases of people infected with both since September 1, 2017, the health unit said. "While it was a sacrifice for both patients and hospital staff, we believe these efforts helped to reduce transmission of respiratory illnesses during a period of heightened flu activity". A month before, February 4-10, the number of confirmed cases was 65.
