Vikings lose RB McKinnon to 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers aren't done building yet.

43 missed tackles forced in 2017. The interior of the line was an obvious weak point in the passing game. He allowed just four sacks in his four seasons with the Giants and earned top-five pass blocking grades from Pro Football Focus over his past two campaigns.

Jerick McKinnon quickly fills a hole at running back for the Niners that Carlos Hyde vacated with his deal with the Browns on Wednesday. Early on Wednesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the 49ers will sign the 25-year-old RB - formerly of the Minnesota Vikings - to a four-year deal worth up to $30 million.

McKinnon likely will start for the 49ers since they lost last year's starter, Carlos Hyde, in free agency to Cleveland.

As the lead back in San Francisco, it's reasonable to expect and uptick from the roughly 12.5 touches per game he's averaged over the last two seasons, but we're unlikely to see him approach the 20-touch range. After scoring a touchdown on the ground against the Saints, he averaged 4.0 YPC and caught 11 passes for 86 yards against the Eagles, leading the team in both rushing and receiving yards. He was used primarily as a secondary back behind Adrian Peterson and later Dalvin Cook.

As for McKinnon, he's not a running back that will dazzle.

It appears as though McKinnon may have found that bigger role he was talking about a couple of months back.

After missing out on free-agent running back Dion Lewis, the San Francisco 49ers are expected to sign another dual-threat running back, Jerick McKinnon.
