Tyrann Mathieu: 5 Potential landing spots in 2018 following release

For the early part of the offseason, it was believed that the Arizona Cardinals and Tyrann Mathieu could come to an agreement over his contract, and settle for a pay cut.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported earlier in March that Mathieu appeared to be on his way out of Arizona.

Unfortunately, good things in the National Football League must come to an end in some occasions, and after failing to figure out a way to re-do his current deal, Arizona decided on Wednesday to move on from their defensive superstar with a release.

Mathieu reportedly is expected to draw interest from the New York Giants and New York Jets, so it could take a bidding war to sign him. Mathieu, a combo defensive back capable of playing corner and safety, could effectively fill the shoes of both players. Mathieu was schedule to make $10.75 million this upcoming season.

Top free agents available are players like Austin Howard, Greg Robinson, Justin Pugh , Chris Clark and Andre Smith. Jelks started at left tackle as a sophomore at Vanderbilt then missed two consecutive seasons with torn ACLs.

Mathieu signed a $62.5 million deal in 2016.

The move comes as the Cardinals embark on the beginning of a rebuild.

Mathieu has said the night he spent in jail for that arrest changed his life.

The New England Patriots should look into signing the LSU defender formerly known as "Honey Badger".

Wayne Rooney pens tribute to Michael Carrick on Twitter
Despite notching 34 caps with England, he has only represented the Three Lions in one major worldwide tournament. Manchester United's Michael Carrick has confirmed this will be his last season as a player.

But he also has been plagued by injuries and only last season did Mathieu appear in all 16 games. He had a reputation for having a nose for the football and played with a reckless abandon that helped shape who he was as a safety.

A second ACL injury prematurely ended Mathieu's 2015 season. In his best season so far, back in 2015, the "Honey Badger" posted 89 combined tackles, 17 pass defends, five interceptions, a sack and a defensive touchdown.

Mathieu started 11 of 13 games played as a rookie in 2013 and recorded 63 tackles, a sack, two INTs, 15 passes defensed, four tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a special teams tackle.

Whatever the cost, the Dallas Cowboys would be wise to pursue safety Tyrann Mathieu in the coming days.
