Get Ready for Secretary of State Mini

But Steve Goldstein, a State Department undersecretary of state for public affairs, said Tillerson did not know why he was being pushed out and had meant to stay.

The President announced in a tweet that he had nominated CIA Director Mike Pompeo to take up the role, saying the 54-year-old "will do a fantastic job".

The president and Tillerson were reported to have disagreed on a number of key issues, including North Korea, moving the USA embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, the removal of the United States from the Paris climate agreement, and the Iran nuclear deal.

Then, last October, Trump announced that he would pull out of the agreement if Iran didn't commit to fully ending its nuclear program. Yet once he took office, Trump continued to recertify the deal - one of former President Barack Obama's signature foreign policy achievements - but also continued to criticize it.

"Much work remains to respond to the troubling behavior and actions on the part of the Russian government", Tillerson said. Mike Pompeo comes highly regarded by many in Washington and I look forward to what he will bring to this important position.

As undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs, Goldstein was the fourth highest ranking official at the State Department. Two senior department officials said Tillerson received a call from John Kelly, Trump's chief of staff, on Friday, but was only told that there might be a presidential tweet that would concern him.

The meeting was warm, these people said, with the president telling Cox that he valued the NRA and wanted to be on the same page. "They have less power over me". "I like it better as a day off in spring than I do a day off in the season", Hinch said.

Goldstein was sacked later on Tuesday, two USA officials told Reuters.

The White House then fired Goldstein just hours after Tillerson was let go on Tuesday morning.

Tillerson was ousted barely four hours after he returned from an Africa mission and with no face-to-face conversation with the president, the latest casualty of an unruly White House that has seen multiple top officials depart in recent weeks.

"We disagreed on things", Trump said moments later, a diplomatic version of a hard relationship with his top diplomat that included reports that Tillerson had called the president a moron in meetings with other officials. Earlier reports suggested that the former ExxonMobil CEO-who reportedly called his boss a "moron"-would soon be on his way out".

But this might not be the end of Trump's relationship with Tillerson.

Journalists travelling home from Africa with Mr Tillerson said there was "zero indication" he knew his departure was imminent, and state department officials confirmed to U.S. media that he had not spoken with Mr Trump before the announcement.

He went on to reveal he had appointed Gina Haspel as Mr Pompeo's successor, the first woman to take on the prestigious position. Mr Trump also had words of praise for Tillerson: "Finally, I want to thank Rex Tillerson for his service".

But this is the Trump White House, where controversy is never far away.

March 8, 2018 - Tillerson says during a visit to Ethiopia that the U.S is not ready for direct talks with North Korea.

Tillerson touted some of the State Department's accomplishments in the past year, talking about USA partners and "troubling" actions from Russian Federation. "With Mike Pompeo, we have a similar thought process".

"We are probing, so stay tuned", Tillerson had said at a press conference in China.

President Donald Trump is cleaning house and going with his nationalist gut now.

Both Reed and Whitehouse voted to confirm Pompeo as Central Intelligence Agency chief over the objections of many liberals, including the Rhode Island Progressive Democrats.
