Vikings Have Contacted Free Agent Drew Brees' Agent

It makes all the sense in the world for Brees to at least feign interest in other teams as he negotiates with the Saints.

For the Vikings, Brees offers a chance to maximize their Super Bowl chances over the next year or two.

Brees has said all along that he has no plans to leave New Orleans, and coaches and ownership have made it seem like he will be back.

Following the second explosion hours later, he said authorities had not settled on a motive and could not rule anything out. If you receive a package you are not expecting and do not recognize the sender or something doesn't seem right, call 911.

The Vikings have a much better chance to land Cousins, who will become a free agent after six years with Washington and could command a contract worth $30 million a year, which would be the highest average per year in National Football League history. That's not to say the Saints don't offer a favorable situation - they do - but Brees would be a great fit in Denver or Minnesota for that matter.

NFL Network reported Minnesota reached out to Brees' agent Monday, the first day teams could conduct contract talks concerning free agents.

He became the starter at right tackle after Stinchcomb retired in 2010, and then went on to start 87 games from 2011 to 2017 for one of the NFL's top offensive units, while also serving an offensive team captain five times.

But we've reached the point on the clock where simply chalking up Brees' Saints return as a fait accompli is a unsafe proposition.

Teddy Bridgewater is able to play after missing significant time because of injury, while veterans Sam Bradford and Case Keenum both are unrestricted free agents.

And presumably Brees would want that, too, since he doesn't want to put the Saints in a bad financial position as they chase another Super Bowl together.

Drew Brees is no doubt elite - he hasn't passed for less than 4,000 yards in a season since 2005, but this marriage isn't likely to happen. He's missed only one game over the last eight years. They can. They have $45 million of salary cap space available. But New Orleans's window to retain Brees is shrinking by the minute with apparently a lot of work to be done. We are just getting over a ridiculous weekend full of trades.
