Authorities investigate death of Binghamton University student from Long Island

According to investigators, Tercero, a United States citizen, fled to Nicaragua before the body of 22-year-old Haley Anderson was discovered at an off-campus house on Friday.

Anderson's family in Westbury has declined to speak to News 12.

Friends spoke fondly of Anderson. "We are very sad", Anadnostakos said. She's being remembered as a sweet girl who grew up in Westbury. She was friendly, joked around... we had a good time together.

Authorities said a suspicious death investigation was held at the residence.

The attractive, bright blonde is pictured in Facebook photos smiling. According to the campaign's description, the unexpected nature of her death and funeral placed an unforeseen financial burden on her family.

Police named 22-year old Orlando Tercero as a person of interest in Anderson's death.

Detectives believe the male student left the country prior to the victim's body being found but would not say where they believe he was headed or release any additional details about him.

A person of interest is reportedly a male nursing student who is said to have been in a romantic relationship with Anderson. Her younger sister also worked at the establishment. That was the last time Anadnostakos saw her.

Before going off to college Anderson worked at a shop walking distance from her home, selling Italian ices and ice cream. "Anyone who knew Haley Anderson knew how her energy lit up every room she walked into, whether it was our lives as her friends or the lives of her patients when she volunteered as a nursing student".

"Tercero, a USA citizen and fellow nursing student at BU, flew to Nicaragua prior to the discovery of 22-year-old Anderson's body Friday at an Oak Street residence on Binghamton's West Side, police announced Monday".

Officials say there is no threat to public safety. The investigation is continuing at this hour.

Anyone with information can contact the Binghamton Police Detective Division at 607-772-7080 or 607-772-7082.

The university's Facebook page offered condolences to the victim's family and friends.

In their post, the university mentioned that they are also providing counseling services to faculty and students during this hard time.

Further investigation is now underway.

"This incident and the circumstances of the death was not a random act or involving the conduct of a stranger", police said, according to NBC.
