Iran plane crash: Turkish private jet 'catches fire'

A private Turkish plane with 11 people on board, all women, crashed in Iran on Sunday while taking the daughter of a top businessman and her friends back home to Turkey from a celebration in the United Arab Emirates.

Just yesterday, before the incident occurred, Miss Basaran posted a photo of herself and seven smiling bachelorettes on her hens trip at a Dubai resort.

The reports, carried by the Hurriyet daily and several Turkish TV channels, said the Bombardier Challenger 604 private plane belonged to the Basaran Holding company of Mina's father Huseyin.

Basaran Investment Holding is active in the food, finance, energy, construction, tourism and travel industries, according to the company's website.

The family gained notoriety during Rob Ford's term as Mayor of Toronto thanks to a spate of personal and work-related controversies.

Reza Jafarzadeh, spokesman for Iran's Civil Aviation Organization, told state television the jet had crashed in the near the southwestern city of Shahr-e Kord.

The plane had left from the emirate of Sharjah and went down near the city of Shahr-e Kord in Iran.


Everyone onboard the plane reportedly died in the crash.

It added that the plane took off from Sharjah International Airport in the UAE.

The state-run IRNA news agency and state television said rescuers were trying to reach the scene of the accident.

He said the eight passengers included at least one member of Basaran's family and, in a Twitter posting, offered condolences.
