An explosion on a tourist ferry last month in Playa del Carmen left at least five USA citizens injured.

The U.S. Embassy did not mention a specific plot targeting Americans, but Olson believes issuing the security alert was the right call.

The personnel travel restrictions have been in place "until further notice", according to a spokesperson for the State Department.

The United States Embassy in Mexico has issued a travel warning for a Mexican resort town, barring employees from travelling there following a security threat alert. That incident came about a week after an explosive device detonated on another ferry, injuring several passengers. After that incident, the embassy prohibited USA government employees from using all tourist ferries. Also, the State Department has closed its consular office there and banned USA government employees from traveling to the city.

The alert system has put out a "Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution" alert.

The State Department has already advised travelers to avoid five states in Mexico due to crime. Alcapulco is located in Guerrero. The move came after a US traveler died in a pool at a resort near Playa del Carmen after drinking.

CBS News correspondent Anna Werner says the resort, in the heart of Mexico's Riviera Maya on the Yucatan peninsula, not far from other tourist hot spots like Cozumel, Cancun, and Tulum, may seem like a tropical paradise, but it has not been spared the violence sweeping other parts of the country.
