Trump will get his military parade - without the tanks

Donald Trump will get to host a large military parade in Washington, but without tanks.

Pentagon plans call for "wheeled vehicles only, no tanks", as they would tear up city roads. Some of those considerations included preventing the parade, which will likely integrate with Washington D.C.'s holiday parade, from featuring tanks and noting that it should include "a heavy air component ... to include older aircraft as available".

Many observers were quick to compare Trump's plans to China and North Korea, even though the parade was inspired by France's Bastille Day Parade, but Trump is apparently planning a very different kind of parade.

Trump had directed the Pentagon to plan a parade for later this year, possibly on Veterans Day, to showcase the USA military's strength.

But he singled out Germany for criticism, reviving a longstanding gripe that European NATO allies do not pay their fair share. The EU, Brazil and Britain were also quick to launch broadsides against the tariffs , which are worth billions of dollars.

The memo said the parade will focus on the contributions of USA veterans from the Revolutionary War up to the current wars, emphasizing "the price of freedom".

The memo outlining the parade does not mention its estimated costs.

"Veterans and Medal of Honor recipients should be surrounding POTUS in the reviewing area at the Capitol", the memo reads, using an acronym for president of the United States.

Trump praised the French display months later when he and Macron met in NY, saying: "We're going to have to try and top it".

Goldman Sachs chief Blankfein to retire as soon as end of year
He rose through the firm's trading business and took the top job in 2006, when Hank Paulson left to become Treasury secretary. Bank of America, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo have all replaced their CEOs over the years.

The Joint Staff will reportedly oversee the planning of the procession, while Northern Command, which oversees USA troops in North America, will carry it out. The Veterans Day date means the parade will happen less than a week after election day, a day some have predicted will bring a "blue wave" of Democrats into office.

During a press briefing at the White House in February, Secretary of Defense James Mattis said, "I think we're all aware, in this country, of the President's affection and respect for the military".

The parade is expected to include participants dressed in period uniforms and will also "highlight the evolution of women veterans", the memo said, "from separate formations in World War II to today's integrated formations".
