North Korea talks: China cautiously 'cheering on' Koreas

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said all relevant sides and particularly the U.S. and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPKK) should conduct a dialogue based on a "dual-track approach" to promote denuclearisation and peace mechanisms.

"During the Pyeongchang Olympics the DPRK (North Korea) did not conduct any nuclear test and the USA and ROK (South Korea) suspended joint exercises. proving that China's proposition of suspension for suspension was right for the problem".

The two Koreas held a landmark meeting in Pyongyang earlier this week. "On March 6, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang issued a statement saying that" China always supports the efforts made by the DPRK and ROK to improve their relations", referring to the formal names of North Korea (the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) and South Korea (the Republic of Korea).

China has responded positively to the developments, as one would expect. Pyongyang's security concerns should be addressed in return for a pledge to denuclearize, he said.

"During the (Pyeongchang) Winter Olympics, North Korea did not carry out a new nuclear test, and the United States and South Korea refrained from military exercises against North Korea", Wang said.

The North also agreed to hold a historic summit between its leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae In in late April.

China's foreign minister Wang Yi called on the United States and North Korea to have talks as soon as possible.

But ties between the two sides have been showing signs of improvement, with this year marking the 40th anniversary of the signing of a bilateral friendship treaty. "History has reminded us time and again that whenever tensions subsided on the peninsula the situation would be clouded by various interferences", he said.

"Talks for the sake of talks are meaningless and we should never loosen sanctions just because North Korea is open to talks", he said.

The last time major global talks were held to persuade North Korea to disarm were the so-called Six Party Talks involving North and South Korea, the US, China Japan, and Russian Federation.
