Tensions have been rising over the past year between Sri Lanka's Sinhalese majority, who are mainly Buddhist, and Muslims, leading to attacks on businesses, homes and places of worship.

Police said there were no major incidents overnight around Kandy, a popular tourist destination 115 kilometres east of the capital Colombo.

Police said almost 150 people, including the main instigator, have been arrested over the unrest.

The Sri Lankan government, on Friday said that a temporary blockade on social media which was imposed on Wednesday to prevent the spread of hate speech in the wake of deadly anti Muslim clashes, will be lifted on Saturday.
