Giants trade for Alec Ogletree to boost linebacker depth

The Giants acquired Ogletree and a seventh-round pick from the Rams in exchange for one of their two fourth-round picks and a sixth-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, according to multiple reports.

The Giants, therefore, who own the second pick in each round, protected their original fourth-round pick, the 102nd overall pick and second of the fourth-round.

Trades can't become official until the new NFL league year opens on March 14.

Ogletree, 26, signed a four-year, $42 million contract extension with the Rams in October that included $30 million in guarantees.

The Giants were in desperate need of linebackers, especially with the expectation of playing in some 3-4 fronts under new defensive coordinator James Bettcher. The addition of Ogletree helps fill one of their biggest needs.

Ogletree also infuses speed to a Giants defense that struggled badly last season.

Ogletree started 15 games for the Rams in 2017 tallying 63 tackles, two sacks and an interception for the No. 2 defense in the NFL.
