'The Shape of Water' scoops best picture at the Oscars

Alexandre Desplat holds the Oscar for Best Original Score for "The Shape of Water" as Guillermo Del Toro is seen accepting the Best Director Oscar on the television screen.

As expected, Britain's Gary Oldman won his first Oscar for playing World War Two leader Winston Churchill in Warner Bros.' "Darkest Hour", while Frances McDormand's woman in a vengeful fury was a popular best actress victor for Fox Searchlight's dark comedy "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".

There were jibes at U.S. president Donald Trump and disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein, while some celebrities pledged support to immigrants and pitched for gender balance in the industry.

Netflix Inc, which is investing heavily in documentary and feature films, won best documentary for "Icarus" about the Olympic doping scandal in Russian Federation.

Also, Indian actor Ali Fazal-starrer "Victoria & Abdul" and Anupam Kher-starrer "The Big Sick" lost on their chance to win an Oscar.

Traditionally, the previous year's best actor victor would present that statuette, but Casey Affleck, who triumphed in 2017 for "Manchester by the Sea", withdrew under a cloud of sexual harassment accusations he denies.

Popular TV host Jimmy Kimmel opened the night at Dolby Theatre here on Sunday by revisiting the past.

Shikhar Dhawan's quick-fire 90 takes India to 174/5
With India teetering at 9/2, Manish Pandey stepped in to join Dhawan and form a strong partnership that would steady the innings. The bowler had Jeevan Mendis plenty to thank as Mendis ran back from mid-off to finish a nice diving catch in the long-off area.

Hosted for the second straight year by late night funnyman Jimmy Kimmel, the 90th Academy Awards capped a hard few months during which the industry has declared war on the pervasive culture of sexual impropriety unearthed by the downfall of movie mogul and alleged serial sex attacker Harvey Weinstein.

The "envelopegate" was quite a scene-stealer at the event, aired in India on Star Movies and Star Movies HD.

"I am an immigrant, like many, many of you, and in the last 25 years, I've been living in a country all of our own", he said, taking the stage following a standing ovation. He is literally a statue of limitations.

Kimmel also urged the winners to say whatever they wanted - be it on sexual harassment or any other issue - but keep it short.

"The Shape of Water" is, at its heart, an optimistic movie.

Fox Searchlight has now collected the Academy Award for best picture a total of four times since 2009 victor "Slumdog Millionaire", and it has built a reputation for taking chances on unusual movies that appeal to independent film fans.

Netflix scored its first feature-film Oscar, with best documentary going to "Icarus", Bryan Fogel's investigation into doping in sports, aided by the assistance of Grigory Rodchenkov, the head of the Russian anti-doping laboratory who candidly discussed the doping scheme under Vladimir Putin. Oldman thanked his almost 99-year-old mother. Oldman and McDormand's win were also no surprise, as both were favorites in the leading actors category. The prestigious award has been won by well-deserving Sam Rockwell for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Longtime Mississippi Sen. Cochran will retire
Tate Reeves, secretary of state Delbert Hosemann, state auditor Stacey Pickering and agriculture commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith. Roger Wicker , also of MS , yelled and gestured to draw the clerk's attention to Cochran, who continued to stare ahead.

Veteran actor Meryl Streep makes yet another appearance at the Oscars in a flowing red dress as she gets nominated once again; this year for "The Post" by director Steven Spielberg.

McDormand left an impact with her acceptance speech after she asked every female nominee in the room to stand up, and asked male gatekeepers to ask them about their projects and ideas not just at Oscar after-parties, but in office meetings following awards season.

"I have two words to leave with you tonight, ladies and gentlemen, Inclusion Rider". "Get Out" won the Academy Award for best original screenplay, and Pixar's "Coco" won for Best Animated Feature.

Some records were also set.

In the director category, he beat out Jordan Peele ("Get Out") who would have been the first African-American to win the award and Greta Gerwig ("Lady Bird") who would have been the second woman in the Oscars 90 year history to win it. Gary Oldman won for his Winston Churchill in "Darkest Hour", Allison Janney ("I, Tonya") took best supporting actress, and Sam Rockwell ("Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri") won best supporting actor.

Supporting Actress: Allison Janney, "I, Tonya".

"And I am from Pakistan and Iowa, two places that nobody from Hollywood can find on the map".
