United Midfielder Scott McTominay Pledges International Career to Scotland

Scott McTominay has been accused of electing to represent Scotland instead of England because he "wants his summers off". The 21-year-old was born in Lancaster but qualifies to play for Scotland through his grandparents, and there is likely to be a tug-of-war over his services.

"What's he playing at?" the former Newcastle star said.

McTominay, who has been associated with United since he was five, signed a new contract in October that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2021.

"I've spoken to (United's Under-23s coach) Ricky Sbragia and Nicky Butt (now head of United's youth academy) and the biggest thing is his work-rate and how much the manager thinks he can trust him". "I can't confirm because I have no information about that and my advice to him is not about national teams, is not about that".

Scotland have not qualified for a major global tournament since the 1998 World Cup, while England have reached every event since, except Euro 2008.

"Going forward, it's up to Alex McLeish, I've not spoken to him yet but I'm sure I will do in the near future and see what the plans are".
