Cellphone catches fire aboard Air Canada flight

A passenger on board an Air Canada flight from Toronto to Vancouver suffered burns when her cellphone caught fire Thursday morning, just as the aircraft was preparing to leave Pearson International Airport.

"‎The aircraft sustained no damage as the crew was able to extinguish the fire promptly".

Toronto Coun. Joe Cressy was aboard the plane when he said he heard "a commotion" 15 to 20 rows behind him.

"The smoke was bigger than the flame, so that's what I saw", Cressy told CP24 via phone. "Once the fire extinguished, paramedics assisted the passenger in possession of the cell phone, who sustained burns to the hands", the statement read.

Cressy said he felt a momentary pang of fear when he saw the smoke.

The flight was delayed for two hours but eventually departed to Vancouver.

She said there remains the possibility of snow lying through Friday and Saturday with isolated snow showers over the weekend. An amber warning is scheduled until Friday afternoon whilst there is a yellow warning for snow and ice in force afterwards.


The Air Canada plane, carrying more than 200 passengers, was bound for Vancouver International Airport. CTV News has not confirmed the details about the device.

"It's lucky they opened the doors as soon as they did because afterwards it probably would have filled the entire plane", one passenger said.

In October 2016, LG rival Samsung issued a recall for its Galaxy Note 7 phones, which were found to have a battery issue that caused some of the phones to explode and catch fire. However, it's not clear what caused the phone to catch fire.

While the fire was "very contained", Fitzpatrick said, passengers seated nearby were asked to deplane so residue from the fire extinguisher could be cleaned up.
