Measles warning issued for Orange and Putnam counties

The New York State Department of Health is warning people in the New York City area that an Australian tourist who visited several attractions and venues from February 16 to 21 was confirmed to have measles.

While there, the tourist stayed at a Comfort Inn & Suites Goshen in Orange County until February 21, according to health officials.

Risk of developing measles is low, especially for those who are immunized.

She noted that not all of the individuals who made contact with the tourist live in the city but that the city has notified the appropriate jurisdictions. The 57 individuals who were affected at the time were all unvaccinated.

"At the hotel, we can't identify every guest, but all of the guests at the hotel did receive notification", Zucker continued, adding that they made sure everyone had immunity. Thus those who have been vaccinated against the infection are safe during this exposure.

Measles can live up to two hours in the air or on surfaces. Individuals may still be vaccinated later in life, according to DOH. Since August 1990, this has also been required of college students. "A lot of people are really immune".

The measles is spread by nasal or throat secretions of infected people.

Measles symptoms include fever, rash, coughing and a runny nose, and usually appear within 10 to 12 days of being exposed to the virus.

Anyone born after January 1, 1957, who has not received two doses of a measles-containing vaccine or does not have a blood test proving immunity to measles, should receive two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine, health officials said.

In 2016, 86 people from 19 states were reported to have measles.

The state is acting proactively on the alert, The Washington Post reports. One-hundred-eighty-eight people from 24 states and the District of Columbia were reported to have measles.

And in 2014, the United States saw a record number of measles cases, with 667 cases from 27 states-the highest number since measles was eliminated in the United States in 2000.

The excursion ended with a stopover at the Watchtower Educational Center in Putnam County. Individuals with symptoms were directed to infirmary staff. A likely traveler who had been infected overseas with measles visited the amusement park while infectious, however no source was identified.

This becomes the cause for other visitors in that location to suffer from the situation of measles as well.
