CT joins 4-state gun coalition

Gov. Cuomo and the Democratic governors of Connecticut, New Jersey and Rhode Island announced the creation Thursday of the "States for Gun Safety" coalition to share resources and intelligence to curb gun trafficking and prevent unsafe individuals from purchasing guns. "However, we can not wait for Congress or the President to act". He said that information could be shared with the other states, along with state data about arrest warrants and protective orders that typically aren't included in the National Instant Criminal Background Check system. "Without possessing this collective information, each state is not necessarily in the best position to determine fitness and suitability of a gun applicant or owner", the memorandum of understanding says. Having said that, there's no substitute for that... we need them to take action. "This idea that we're going to be safer because we have more arms doesn't work very well in Syria, doesn't work very well in Iraq, and probably won't work very well here", he said in the CNN interview. "The probability is they also go across our borders to make gun purchases".

Some states have stricter rules about gun shows.

The multi-state coalition builds on years of progress spearheaded by Governor Cuomo to combat gun violence in NY.

As part of the coalition, the four states will create a cross-state task force of law enforcement officials that will trace and intercept illegal guns, form a Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium and step up intelligence and information sharing among the states, according to the release.

"In light of that terrible tragedy we felt we wanted to accelerate", said New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy.

The current lack of gun violence research is due to federal government policies, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said.

Governor Cuomo says NY state is doing something about it. One thing remains clear: we would be better off if every state and the federal government enacted sensible gun safety rules.

"We want to send a powerful message to the entire country that it's possible to strengthen gun laws and save lives", said Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo.

"Not necessarily an additional expenditure of funds, you know".

But some states give their licensing authorities discretion to ban people they deem a risk to public safety, and Mr. David said they could use New York's database as an investigative tool to make their own determination.

"My daughter kept asking me, as she has for the past week, 'Mom, what are you going to do about it?'" said Gov. Raimondo.

The governors are planning to ask other governors to join with them at the National Governors Association meeting this weekend.
