Indonesia's Mt Sinabung volcano erupts sending huge ash cloud into air

The eruption of Indonesia's Mount Sinabung that shot ash 5 kilometreshigh also blew away much of the mountain's summit.

According to the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (CVGHM), the latest eruption occurred at 8.59 am local time.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia's Disaster Agency, said: "In five districts it became dark with a visibility of about five metres".

An Indonesian volcano erupted Monday, sending a massive column of ash and smoke some 5,000 metres (16,400 feet) into the air, leaving local villages coated in debris and officials scrambling to hand out face masks to residents.

Volcanologist Devy Kamil Syahbana said Tuesday that the chunk, known as the "lava dome", had a volume of at least 1.6 million cubic metres.

Mount Sinabung is one of the 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia.

No one lives inside a previously announced no-go zone around the volcano.
