Voting in India's Tripura state begins

The people of Tripura will vote tomorrow in a state where Chief Minister Manik Sarkar's Left Front government has been in power for 25 years and is looking for a straight win this time.

Tripura, a CPI-M bastion, is one of the two states where the Left still rules.

The BJP, which has stormed the north and northeast India in last few years, is trying to keep its footprint in the eastern state of India.

Tripura will witness Assembly election to 60 seats on February 18 and the results will be declared on March 3.

The counting of votes will be done on March 3. Voting in 59 seats of Tripura's 60-seat assembly began at 7 am on Sunday. The CPI (M) has fielded 57 candidates, while the BJP has fielded 51 candidates leaving the rest of the constituencies for its alliance partner "Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura".

The CPI (M), which leads the ruling coalition, is contesting 56 seats while partners - RSP, Forward Bloc and CPI - have fielded one candidate each.

It also sought that the observer should be available at duly notified places and time so that candidates, election agents and other party functionaries can meet and present their complaints.

The voter turnout in Tripura Assembly election by 9 p.m. on Sunday was 78.56 percent, Tripura Election Commissioner G. Kameswara Rao said.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has appointed a Special Observer while the authorities have sealed the global and inter-state borders with Tripura. Three hundred companies of central armed forces have been deployed across the state along with state armed personnel and the police. IPFT will contest in the remaining nine seats.
