Mueller unveils new indictment, charging lawyer with lying to investigators

Mueller unveils new indictment, charging lawyer with lying to investigators

The lawyer, Alex Van der Zwaan, is the son-in-law of Russian oligarch German Khan.

The key piece of information in all of this is the timing: Manafort resigned as Trump's campaign manager on August 19, 2016 - weeks before the alleged conversations between Gates, Person A, and van der Zwaan.

US Special Counsel Robert Mueller has charged the lawyer of Paul Manafort's business partner Rick Gates with lying to Russian Federation probe investigators. Prosecutors say he talked with Gates in 2016 about that work.

Her sentence was viewed by much of the worldwide community - including Russian Federation - as political in nature.

The firm was hired by former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, a pro-Russian strongman with ties to President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and Tymoshenko's political opponent.

Gates was Manafort's business partner.

Gates and Manafort, according to Ukraine government records, earned millions of dollars in their work for Yanukovych that was not reported.

The Skadden report found that Yanukovych-era legal officials did not deprive Tymoshenko of her right to due process during the trial, in a report that State Department official Victoria Nuland criticized at the time as "incomplete".

Former BigLaw associate is charged in Mueller... Tymoshenko is a former political rival of Manafort's client Victor Yanukovich, a former president of Ukraine. According to the indictment, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents personally questioned van der Zwaan in November 2017 about his communications with Gates and an unidentified Person A (which seems likely to be Manafort, though that's not 100 percent clear).

Khan, Van der Zwaan's father-in-law, is a billionaire and a part owner of Alfa Group, Russia's largest private banking group.

Rick Gates, already facing a slew of charges from Mueller's office, is reportedly expected to accept a plea deal this week and has been working with prosecutors. He will plead guilty in the coming days.
