Winter Olympics: Eric Radford becomes first openly gay man to win gold

Radford joined Australian diver Matthew Mitcham as the only openly gay Olympic champions to win gold at an Olympics.

Rippon came out in 2015, and won the US championships.

Rippon helped the team figure skating bronze with a near-flawless performance, and won over the entire Internet in the process thanks to his skill, his story, and his refreshingly honest tweets and interviews.

"This is unbelievable! I literally feel like I might explode with pride", he tweeted Monday when Canada was awarded the gold medal in the team figure skating event.

The strong opening weekend for out LGBTQ athletes comes after nearly half of those who competed at the 2016 Olympics in Rio took home a medal.

Others have congratulated the duo, describing their success as 'absolutely incredible'.

Meagan Duhamel, a vegan figure skater, has landed herself a gold medal at this year's Winter Olympics in South Korea.

Decades prior, at the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck in 1976, British skater John Curry also won a figure skating gold, but his sexuality was not made public until he was outed by a German newspaper later that year. He has since continued to build himself a large social media following with this witty postings and LGBTI advocacy.

One said: "I don't even get why this is a headline? Their sexual preference is such a non-issue!"

But it was Radford's team who earned first place, with the skater winning gold alongside Gabrielle Daleman, Patrick Chan, Kaetlyn Osmond, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.
