US 2018 elections 'under attack' by Russia: US intelligence chief

Mr Coats and other U.S. top intelligence chiefs were united on Tuesday in declaring that Russian Federation is continuing efforts to disrupt the USA political system and is targeting the 2018 midterm election, following its successful operation to sow discord in the most recent presidential campaign, New York Times reported.

In a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on the most urgent threats facing the country, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and the heads of the CIA, FBI, NSA and two other spy agencies were unanimous in saying that Moscow's efforts to disrupt United States politics are as intense now as they were in the 2016 presidential election.

Pakistan, in fact, will continue to threaten United States interests by deploying new nuclear weapons capabilities, maintaining its ties to militants, restricting counter-terrorism cooperation, and drawing closer to China, Coats said in his testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

"At a minimum, we expect Russian Federation to continue using propaganda, social media, false-flag personas, sympathetic spokespeople, and other means of influence to try to exacerbate social and political fissures in the United States", he said.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WVEC)- The nation's intelligence agency chiefs said Tuesday there's no doubt the Russians interfered in the 2016 elections with sophisticated cyber operations and false information social media campaigns, and there's no doubt they will keep trying.

In testifying, Coats apparently had in mind the 2016 U.S. presidential election in which Russian Federation is alleged to have carried out large-scale interference including cyber attacks.

Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo told lawmakers the US and its allies "have built a global coalition pushing back against Kim Jong-un and his terror regime", and said he would disclose more information about the coalition's plans in a closed hearing later in the day.

"We've seen some activity (directed) at state elected officials that were attempts to electronically to search those individuals", Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr told ABC News.

National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers warned that "this is not going to change or stop".

USA intelligence agencies concluded previous year that Moscow sought to influence the 2016 presidential campaign in favor of then-Republican candidate Donald Trump.

And after the Congress took real action against Russian Federation by slapping it with major sanctions in response to the interference, Trump completely undermined their work by declining to enforce the sanctions.

He also said social media companies, whose platforms have been fertile turf for Russian bots seeking to stoke divisions among Americans, have been "slow to recognize the threat" and that "they've still got more work to do".

None of the other agency heads could say that the president had directed them to counter Russian meddling, and while senators probed for a detailed plan on how to counter Russian active measures, the witnesses made clear that there is no comprehensive plan in place or being developed. He hasn't even tweeted a single concern. He said al-Qaida "will remain a major actor in global terrorism" and will remain "intent on attacking the United States and US interests overseas".

Pompeo added: "Sen. Reed, we have a significant effort".

Pyongyang said following that launch as well that that it had test-fired its most advanced missile, putting the USA mainland within range, and also declared itself to be "a responsible nuclear power".

Joaquin Phoenix will play Batman villain The Joker in standalone DC movie
Imagine for a moment Phoenix's Commodus from Gladiator speaking with the Joker's singsong voice, and then try not to smile. Sources say the story will take place in the '80s and have more of the look of a gritty crime drama than comic-book movie.

Putin and his officials have vehemently denied any and all suggestions that they meddled in the 2016 presidential election, accusing the US of stoking Russophobia.
