Qualcomm's X24 Modem Pushes 4G LTE to 2Gbps

Qualcomm expects its 2Gbps modems to pull down real-world averages between 200 and 600 megabytes per second, or Mbps. While many service providers have begun working on gigabit LTE in earnest, the faster network still isn't completely deployed nationwide. This unprecedented feature set is created to allow devices that feature the Snapdragon X24 LTE modem to utilize all spectrum assets available from a mobile operator, whether in licensed spectrum, or with License Assisted Access (LAA).

As we continue to march towards 5G, the technology for gigabit LTE continues to be an important part of mobile data.

Qualcomm says the new X24 LTE modem can reach theoretical speeds of 2Gbps, wherever supported by carries, which is a significant improvement over theoretical speeds of 1.2Gbps achieved by X20 LTE modem.

The chipset giant has already started sampling the modem, with devices expected to hit the market by the end of 2018. That could create an opportunity for other smartphone makers to differentiate their devices with the Snapdragon X24, but to do that they will need to build products that can support what the chip has to offer, including massive MIMO, carrier aggregation, 256-QAM and license-assisted access. "We're excited to demonstrate these advancements at Mobile World Congress and showcase how our technologies are created to expand the reach of 5G NR to new industries, new deployment and business models, and new ecosystem participants".

The new Snapdragon X24 can support up to seven times carrier aggregation and 4x4MIMO on up to five different bands on downlink. There is also full-dimension Multi-Input Multi-Output (FD-MIMO) to give way to carriers to start sending their 5G signals.

Following the world's first 1Gbps speeds demonstration in November 2015 and the first commercial Gigabit LTE network launch in January 2017, this latest technology breakthrough accelerates joint efforts by Ericsson, Telstra, Qualcomm Technologies and NETGEAR to deliver the world's leading Gigabit LTE network, paving the way for increased capability and performance on the journey towards 5G.
