Prince Henrik: Danish prince denied title of King dies

Prince Henrik's anger at his title could be an issue that touches the British royal family too, say insiders.

Henrik is survived by his wife, sons Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim, and eight grandchildren.

His eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik, left the Winter Olympics and returned to Denmark to be by his father's side on February 9.

The 77-year-old queen accepted her husband's decision, the Royal House said at the time, breaking a 459-year-old tradition of burying royal spouses together. Many people have already laid down flowers and have lit candles in honour of Prince Henrik at Amalienborg Castle in Copenhagen and at Fredensborg Castle where he died.

On Tuesday, Henrik was moved from a Copenhagen hospital to the family's residence north of the capital, "where he wishes to spend his last moments", the royal palace said.

The French-born prince was diagnosed with dementia past year and, was admitted to hospital in January with a lung infection.

After a 2009 Danish referendum supported the equality of the sexes in the royal succession, Henrik remarked: "I hope that men will be as equal as girls", spurring further debate and briefly finding support in parliament in favour of allowing Prince Henrik the title of king.

Like most monarchies, a princess in Denmark becomes queen if her husband ascends to the throne but a man does not become king by being married to a queen. The law was subsequently amended to give him about 10 percent of the annual royal allocation.
