"Traditionally, in the Old Testament, people would receive ashes when they were grieving or in repentance", Watson said.

On Ash Wednesday, many have ashes applied to their foreheads as the words "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return" are said. But, also, perhaps Valentine's Day this year can be a reminder of how much God loves us.

Warne told his Episcopalian parish that they don't have to beat themselves up during Lent. "We also love to collaborate on events with organizations of different faiths, so if anyone is interested in doing an event, they can definitely email me". We often share with family and friends what we are "giving up" for the next forty days to give ourselves more time and clarity for God.

He's already started thinking about what he'll say during Easter service.

FOR THE CITIZENS' VOICE Monsignor John Bendik applies ashes to a woman's forehead during the afternoon Ash Wednesday Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church in Pittston a year ago.
