IDC: Google Sold A "Tiny" 3.9M Pixel Phones In 2017

IDC: Google Sold A

Google shipped 3.9 million Pixel and Pixel 2 devices in 2017 which is almost double the units it sold in 2016 but a tiny fraction of the global smartphone market that numbers 1.5 billion units.

Google Pixel and Pixel 2 sales doubled to 3.9 million units in 2017.

As IDC points out, it leaves Google with "a tiny portion of the 1.5 billion market size" for smartphones overall. Firstly, 3.9 million units is a small part of the overall Android market. Based on its most recent sales figures, Apple was selling nearly 850,000 iPhones each day in the first quarter of 2018.

The Android versus iOS war may often be phrased in terms of Pixel vs iPhone, but new sales stats for Google's Pixel suggest there's a long way to go before Apple needs to be anxious. Lower-end phones lead to more sales, and Samsung matches yearly Pixel shipments every 3.5 days. Google has proven it is good at the "phone building" part of being in the smartphone business-the Pixel 2 and 2 XL are easily the best Android phones you can buy. Google seems to have improved its supply line issues with the Pixel 2, which has consistently been in stock.

The Google Pixel phones have been very well received since they first appeared in 2016.

The Pixel range debuted in 2016 and got a refresh late past year, which brought us the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, so it's a relatively new brand when compared to iPhone and Galaxy S. Its availability is also limited to a handful of markets.

One thing not many people will realize is that Google's smartphone pricing is even more high-end than Apple's, though.
