House panel opens investigation of ex-Trump aide Rob Porter

"Those are the questions that I think aught to be asked", Gowdy said on CNN.

He said he welcomes chairman of the House Oversight Committee Rep. Trey Gowdy's investigation into this situation.

He added that he was "troubled by nearly every aspect" of Porter's employment at the White House.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Wednesday the revelations were a sign of a "breakdown in the system".

Porter resigned after DailyMail.com reported their allegations against him.

It notes that FBI Director Christoper Wray appeared to contradict the White House on its timeline on the handling of the matter - and it wants to know "what information was available to the adjudicator of Porter's interim clearance at the time it was adjudicated; who adjudicated his clearance; and what derogatory information was subsequently made available to the White House on Porter, when, and to whom".

The White House continues to stand by Chief of Staff John Kelly despite calls for his resignation.

In a letter sent Wednesday to FBI Director Christopher Wray, Gowdy said the panel is investigating the interim security clearance process and "the extent to which any security clearance issued to Porter comported with those policies and processes".

'The chronology is not favorable from the White House'.

The White House has given shifting accounts of when top officials learned of the allegations, bringing intense scrutiny to Kelly's actions. Fox News is told, however, that Kelly is not being pushed out.

The US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis played down the incident, saying: "This could just be a local couple of guys doing something". The attack was reportedly called for by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) militia and lasted for about four hours.

As staff secretary, Porter handled some of the Oval Office's most sensitive materials, which should have made his security clearance a priority after Trump took office in January 2017.

'What did you know, from whom did you hear it?' Gowdy said.

In an opinion piece in The Washington Post, Holderness wrote that Conway's first statement "implies that those who have been in abusive relationships are not strong".

Porter resigned after Holderness and his second ex-wife, Jennifer Willoughby, came forward with allegations of emotional and physical abuse. "You can't justify that".
