North Korea has 'no intention' to meet USA officials during Olympics

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un's sister, making an unprecedented visit to South Korean soil, will now likely attend the same opening ceremony as U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who's vowing toughest-ever sanctions on the North.

By sending a youthful, photogenic person who will undoubtedly attract worldwide attention during the games, North Korea may also be trying to craft a fresher public image and defang any USA effort to use the Olympics to highlight the North's brutal human rights record.

Expectations are sky-high for an array of stars including American skiers Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn, while the big question in figure skating centres on whether Japan's "Ice Prince" Yuzuru Hanyu can recover from injury to retain his crown.

It is now unclear how the unidentified Korean man was able to jump the barriers and get onto the ice chute but local police in Pyeongchang, the South Korean resort where the two week tournament is held, say they are investigating.

However, some individual Russian athletes will be allowed to participate in the Games by competing under a neutral Olympic flag. This was not supposed to be, as some in Seoul grumble, the "Pyongyang Games", a play on the North Korean capital's phonetic similarity to Pyeongchang. In a gold-medal diplomatic performance, after months of silence on the issue, Pyongyang said it would be happy to send a delegation to the Games.

There was also "the vision of peace in the sky" which was a constellation inside the arena, while "the balance of yin and yang" saw Korean drummers perform in unison before forming the South Korea flag. Hostilities have never officially ceased, and occasional cross-border incidents punctuate a 70-year ceasefire.

That same day, in a display of strength, North Korea honored the anniversary of its military's foundation with an enormous parade which trailed down the streets of Pyongyang in a wave of red army coats, swinging saber dancers, and what appeared to be ballistic missiles.

At the same time, the US deficit is growing and would be bumped up even more by the Senate budget deal, if it passes Congress. Treasury yields fell from four-year highs on Monday as the selloff in equity markets sparked demand for low risk debt.


"We are at a state of war and we are inviting the prostitutes of our enemy", one demonstrator at an anti-North Korean rally told AFP.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach, in his speech, alluded to doping by calling on athletes to "stay clean".

Spectators at the open-air stadium will be provided with several items to fend off the region's bitter cold and high winds during the ceremony, including a raincoat, a blanket and knitted hats, as well as hand, feet and seat warmers.
