Winter storm crashes into Midwest

MDOT operates 85 plows in South west MI and have begun 12 hours shifts to try and keep up with the snow on state trunk lines and highways in southwest MI.

Some of the highest totals are forecast in northern IL, including the Chicago area, as well as northern in and southern MI.

Ice and snow covered Chicago's expressways, where there were at least 25 crashes overnight, the Chicago Tribune reported. About 200 flights were canceled or delayed at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus, Michigan on Friday.

The Chicago Department of Aviation says roughly 550 flights were canceled at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and about 230 flights were canceled at Chicago's Midway Airport.

The snow from a winter storm moving across the Great Lakes is leaving roads treacherous, closing schools and cancelling hundreds of flights across the upper Midwest. CPS officials said Friday morning they expected classes to resume Monday. Chicago Public Schools canceled classes Friday.

Crashes were reported, including a multi-vehicle smashup that closed a stretch of eastbound Interstate 94 near Ann Arbor.

Schools in Chicago and MI announced cancellations ahead of Winter Storm Mateo.

Forecasters expected the first round of snowfall to gum up evening commutes, especially in Detroit, but then taper off during the night. The snow that began falling late Thursday afternoon is expected to continue through Friday as the storm moves east.

Four major U.S. airlines - Delta, United, Frontier and Southwest - issued weather waivers for passengers, allowing travelers to change their reservations without incurring fees.

That would be a significant improvement over the forecast from Thursday night, when it appeared the Chicago area could see as much as 12 inches by Friday afternoon, and up to 17 inches by Sunday.

"It's too early quite yet to call it over", Chicago weather service meteorologist Todd Kluber said.

Grizzlies: Evans trade 'offers weren't sufficient'
The Denver Nuggets attempted to trade for Tyreke Evans with the Memphis Grizzlies at the deadline and presented two offers. Ainge is a realist in that he knows a player like Evans won't propel them over-the-top in order to beat Golden State.

Schools were closed in both cities and multiple vehicle crashes were reported on icy roads.
