Trump praises White House aide accused of domestic abuse

Mick Mulvaney, President Donald Trump's chief budget officer, is in the spotlight this week as staffers consider what might happen if White House chief of staff John Kelly leaves in the wake of the Rob Porter scandal.

Per multiple reports, President Trump has been frustrated about this whole thing, and even apparently called Kelly's predecessor, Reince Priebus, to gripe about him. "He said very strongly yesterday that he is innocent", Trump said, defending the 40-year-old former staffer. On Wednesday, when the story broke, Kelly said he was "shocked" by the most recent allegations and said domestic violence has no place in our society.

The White House chief of staff has spent four days in the spotlight after he first defended White House staff secretary Rob Porter after his ex-wives accused him of abuse, before accepting his resignation.

In an interview with CNN, Porter's ex-wife Jennifer Willoughby detailed allegations of abuse, saying that during her marriage she lived under a "low-grade constant terror of not knowing what I might do to set something off". "It was very sad when we heard about it. and as you probably know, he says he's innocent and I think you have to remember that".
