Search continues for 7 believed trapped in Taiwan quake

As of Friday morning, 10 people were confirmed dead in the quake, four from Chinese mainland, five from Taiwan and one from the Philippines.

As of 4 p.m. Friday, at least 12 people had been killed in the Hualien natural disaster, and five people thought to be in the Yun Men Tsui Ti building remained unaccounted for, according to official tallies.

There are 92 St Lucians now living in Taiwan according to Taiwan's National Immigration Agency.

The magnitude 6.4 quake, which hit near the coastal city just before midnight (1600 GMT) on Tuesday, also injured 243 people and collapsed four buildings, officials said.

The Hualien quake came exactly two years to the day after a similar sized tremor struck the western city of Tainan, killing 117 people - most in a single apartment block which collapsed.

More than 100 people were killed in a quake in southern Taiwan in 2016, and some Taiwanese remain scarred by a 7.6 magnitude quake that was felt across the island and killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
