Kim Jong-un's sister to visit Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, says South

"We have no intention whatsoever to meet United States authorities during our visit to the South", Cho Yong-sam, a senior foreign ministry official, was quoted as saying by the North's official KCNA news agency.

That set off a rapid series of meetings which saw the two Koreas agree to march together at the opening ceremony and form a unified women's ice hockey team, their first for 27 years.

However, on a stop in Alaska en route to Japan, Pence left open the possibility of a face-to-face with senior North Korean officials who are also attending Friday's ceremony in South Korea.

New satellite images showed that North Korea is building two new bases as well as upgrading two other facilities that could put troops in South Korea within 30 minutes. Bandleader-cum-apparatchik Hyon Song-wol is already in South Korea leading North Korea's Samjiyon Orchestra, which shows that Kim Jong-un has a lot riding on the Winter Olympics.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's younger sister Yo-jong will come to South Korea on Friday to attend the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

"Our forces are ready and our nation is resolved", Pence said in a speech to US troops at the Yokota Air Base in Japan, as he prepared to fly to South Korea to attend the Winter Olympics.

The 30-year-old's visit - the first time any member of the Kim dynasty has visited the country - was announced as the United States said it was planning its "toughest and most aggressive" economic sanctions against North Korea in the coming days. While Pence pledged that the USA would stop North Korea from threatening his homeland, Kim paraded mobile missile launchers through Pyongyang.

Speaking to USA and Japanese troops at the Yokota Air Base outside Tokyo, Pence vowed to continue the "maximum pressure campaign" on North Korea in a bid to force Pyongyang to give up its nuclear missile program.

Mr Pence warned that North Korea would not be allowed to instrumentalise the Games.

But the diplomatic effort will not extend to the US Vice-President Mike Pence, who arrived in South Korea today.

The leaflets, which NK News said were found on Saturday, also welcomed the "North Korean athletes, cheerleaders, journalists, taekwondo display team, and performance artists".

He said it was important to enjoy the Games as well as scramble for medals. "The aim is to have fun, and be as good friends when we go back as when we came here".
