UP jumps to 156th place in THE Asia 2018 top 200

It is another major achievement of UVAS after qualifying in QS Asian University Rankings a few months back.

"As higher education competition heats up across the continent, Hong Kong's lower-ranked universities are at risk of declining further in future years". It bases its rankings on 13 performance indicators grouped into the following areas: teaching, research, citations, industry income and global outlook.

Both IISc and the Indian Institute to Technology-Bombay however dropped two places each to the 29th and 44th rank as compared to previous year.

However, two new entries - the Indian School of Mines at the 141st position and the Banaras Hindu University at 194 - have marked as a remarkable development in the country.

At the same time, other major research nations in the region have either been unable to match such improvements in research impact or, in the case of South Korea and Taiwan, have slipped back on this measure, which forms nearly a third of the overall score.

Considering data from all Hong Kong's institutions, on average, the score for research and worldwide outlook increased.

Tsinghua University, the country's top ranked institution, comes in at number two in the overall list after the National University of Singapore, which retained its top ranking.

While IISc and IIT-Bombay dropped by two places to 29 and 44, IIT-Madras fell from the 41st position in 2017 to 103rd place in 2018.

These are the sixth annual Asia University Rankings published by the Times Higher Education weekly magazine, which this year ranked the top 350 institutions in Asia based on the same criteria as the World University Rankings - but with modifications to better reflect the characteristics of Asia's universities. Its only area of decline was teaching reputation, the rankings analysis found.

Phil Baty, the editorial director of global rankings, said that India had improved on "12 of the 13 metrics underlying the rankings".

India, the third-most-represented country in the list, with 42 institutions, has also seen its average citation impact scores go up, although not as strongly as China.

Baty said India was still among the region's leading higher education country even as several of its institutions have registered a decline. Pakistan's performance was mixed.
