Ford will construct Ranger Raptor for Asian market

When Ford announced a Raptor version of its hot new Ranger midsize pickup, the internet collectively started looking like the giant cave rave scene from the second "Matrix" movie, and that's not exactly a surprise. This comes just weeks after the Ranger's U.S. debut at the Detroit Auto Show. Other upgrades include dent-resistant front bumpers, its ground clearance has increased to 11-inches and a Fox Racing Shox shock absorbers.

Under the skin is a chassis frame tailored to high-speed use off-road, new coilover rear suspension using a Watt's link setup and solid rear axle, and stiffened side rails. The Ranger Raptor boasts a 210-horsepower 2.0-liter Bi-Turbo diesel engine mated to a 10-speed transmission it shares with the popular F-150 Raptor.

That power equates to 157kW, with torque dropping in at 500Nm.

Shifting gears is the company's new 10-speed automatic transmission, shared with the F-150 Raptor and soon to be offered in the face-lifted Mustang sports vehicle. In the spirit of wild speculation, let's compare it to its most likely competition which we see as the Chevy Colorado ZR2, the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and of course the Ranger Raptor's big brother, the F-150 Raptor.

"It is awesome to enable this level of performance and create a vehicle that can provide off-road enthusiasts such an adrenaline rush", says Jamal Hameedi, Ford Performance Chief Engineer.

The new vehicle from Ford's performance team will launch in the Asia Pacific market. The steel front bumper adds LED lighting and new aerodynamic air curtains.

The Ranger Raptor's exterior paint palate includes: Lightning Blue, Race Red, Shadow Black, Frozen White, and Conquer Grey. It stands at 1873mm tall, 2180mm wide and 5398mm long. Out back, the modified rear bumper comes with an integrated towbar and two recovery hooks rated at 8,377 pounds (there are also two towhooks up front and they're rated at 9,920 pounds). The sensors and tow connectors have been changed, too.

Providing an abundance of space, the 1560mm x 1743mm tray has been designed with the weekend explorer in mind, while the 2,500kg towing capacity also accounts for dirt bikes or jet-skis, as well as traditional work needs during the week.

Additionally, the new Ford Ranger Raptor adopts the Baja driving mode from the F-150 Raptor.

"When the dust settles, you will see our first high-speed off-road compact pick-up", the maker says.

The dash cluster has aggressive styling, encompassing a host of Driver Assist features. There are also blue highlights and leather accents throughout the cabin, along with a new steering wheel with perforated leather grip sections and magnesium paddle shifters.

In short, enthusiasts have been clamouring for just such a mid-size pick-up truck and Ford Middle East will have to be mad not to offer the 2018 Ranger Raptor in our region as soon as it starts rolling out of the Thailand plant...

The Satellite Navigation System comes into its own when off-roading in remote areas, even offering a "breadcrumb" feature to leave a trail when entering un-chartered areas - flawless for the serious off-roader. "So, if it's North America, you get an F-150 Raptor; the rest of the world, you get a Ranger Raptor". Ford Australia hasn't released pricing or the local release date.
