Defensive US military strikes kill 100 pro-regime forces in Syria

American jets bombed Syrian "pro-regime forces" Wednesday, the Pentagon said, after what it described as an "unprovoked attack" against US -backed rebel fighters east of the Euphrates River.

That attack, though, spurred a counterstrike from the US -led coalition.

Pro-government forces in Syria launched an assault on a base where US troops were operating in support of local partner units, triggering a counterattack from USA aircraft, the USA military said on Wednesday.

"Syrian pro-regime forces maneuvered T-54 and T-72 main battle tanks with supporting mortar fire in what appears to be a coordinated attack on the SDF approximately 8 kilometre east of the Euphrates River de-confliction line in Khusham, Syria", the military official said.

The coalition said the attack took place in the Middle Euphrates River Valley, five miles east of the agreed-on "de-confliction" line created to separate Russian-backed regime troops and US-backed forces in Syria. "Russian officials assured Coalition officials they would not engage Coalition forces in the vicinity".

This is not the first time the USA military has clashed with pro-regime forces in Syria.
