The estranged wife of Australia's Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce says she and their four daughters are devastated by the news he's having a baby with a former staffer.

"Look my personal view is that this is a private matter", Dan Tehan, the Minister for Social Services told ABC's Radio National yesterday morning, "It should be up to the individual, what they would like to put into the public domain or not".

But neither Joyce nor Campion have spoken publicly about their situation. "People can not possibly know what people's personal circumstances are and certainly I, and I would hope no one on my side of politics is going to participate in a public debate... I don't think it would be right for any other politician".

"Everybody is trying to second guess what is a deeply private matter and I'm not going to do that".

Vikki Campion is living with Barnaby Joyce in the NSW town of Armidale.

Mr Joyce said there was no evidence that he had used taxpayer dollars for trips to conduct a relationship with the staffer.

Labor's Chris Bowen also declined to comment on the story in front of Parliament House today saying he wished Barnaby Joyce all the best in his family life.

She has reportedly moved in with Joyce and is due to give birth in April, The Telegraph reports. I think he's a very poor deputy prime minister.

She added: 'Naturally we feel deceived and hurt by the actions of Barnaby and the staff member involved'.

"I acknowledge that I'm now separated, so that's on the record", Joyce told Parliament.

He continued, "But I'm not going to start saying 'Well therefore, I'm gonna say that because I failed, I'm going to completely change my views and definition'".
