Todd Frazier staying close to home, signs 2-year deal with Mets

Frazier, 31, is one of the fortunate ones in a group of free agents who remain unsigned on the cusp of spring training.

The Mets have agreed to a two-year, $17 million deal with free agent third baseman Todd Frazier, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The deal is pending a physical. The New Jersey native had 27 home runs in 2017 but batted just.213, which likely contributed to the somewhat modest amount of money he is signing for. Frazier has hit at least 25 home runs in each of the last four seasons. He hit a career-high 40 home runs and 98 RBI in 2016 with the White Sox. This signing also gives Asdrubal Cabrera what he's wanted, which is the chance to play second base rather than third. His thumbs-down celebration-adapted from the reaction of a New York Mets fan-became a staple for Yankees players. Chris Carter led the National League in home runs (41) in 2016 and was out of a job last season by mid-July.

Sandy Alderson previously said while he has had some "focus" on improving the infield, the team was thinking "expansively" this offseason. "So we're set out to make the playoffs and do well ... try to win the World Series, not try and be at the top five in payroll".

But there's no way the Mets can count on him playing this season, creating the need for a player like Frazier.

The Mets began past year with a $157 million payroll for its 40-man roster and trimmed it to $149 million as injuries and poor pitching wrecked their postseason chances.

The Mets still have captain David Wright on the roster, but the longtime third baseman's future is in doubt after injuries and a chronic back condition limited him to 75 regular-season games over the last three years. Jose Reyes would be the utility infielder. The Mets aren't expected to be contenders next season.
